DISTRICT PROFILE COLOGNE – STAMMHEIM

The green quarter Stammheim is by Cologne standards a medium-sized district in which feel especially families. These live mostly in new buildings and terraced and detached houses. It is a rather green district with a gorgeous park and direct access to river Rhein.

The name of the district suggests that there once was a royal estate - the Stammgut. And in fact, there was a representative manor house owned by Archbishop Bruno of Cologne who gifted it together with all its land to the monastery of Groß Sankt Martin in Cologne. The first mention of Stammheim dates back to 959. Unfortunately, the castle Stammheim was completely destroyed in a bombing raid in 1944. After Bayer AG took over the site from the city of Cologne and removed the ruins of the former castle, something new was created in 1955: The Ulrich-Haberland-Haus, a retirement home for Bayer AG employees, was built in the immediate vicinity. In addition, the castle park was restored. Unfortunately, after numerous interim uses, the Ulrich-Haberland-Haus is currently empty.

The idyllic castle park with many foreign trees and a long avenue invites to take a stroll and linger. The entrance to the park has been restored and the two stone lions guarding the park shine in new splendor. On weekends, lots of people make use of the premises and jog, play balls or hang around on picnic blankets.

With the Cologne-Stammheim stop, the district also has its own S-Bahn station, where the S-Bahn line 6 of Deutsche Bahn stops. Buses 151-153, 155 and 250 connect the district to adjoining neighborhoods, such as the city center. Mülheim, where many shopping opportunities. But also on-site, all the daily necessities can be done easily.

More and more residents found work in the new factories, especially at Bayer's paint factories. Today, the urban wastewater treatment plant in Stammheim, the largest sewage treatment plant in Cologne, in which more than 80 percent of Cologne's sewage is cleared, provides the majority of jobs in the district.

Rental prices are moderate in the district - partly due to the sewage plants located and covering a huge area in the northern part of the district. But since the majority of the district is very residential mostly apartment blocks, rather solid in the South, more loosely towards the North, and even single and double houses in the upper North corner, and ist good connection to Mülheim ant its train hub, it gained popularity. Consequently, prices have risen, too. Currently, the m² cost around 10-12 EUR cold rent in the district.
