BERLIN MITTE

Mitte is a favourite with tourist and residents alike as it offers a wide range of shopping opportunities, restaurants, bars, night clubs, museums, art galleries, theatres, concert halls and in the summer even a beach bar along the Spree River. Despite it being in the heart of the city Mitte also offers numerous parks, such as, the famous Tiergarten, and the Monbijou park along the river, there are also plenty of children playgrounds to enjoy outdoor activities. Mitte is home to the German parliament and other government buildings. Most embassies are also located in the area. Berlin’s oldest University, Humboldt Universitat, and its medical faculty Charite are also in the neighbourhood.

 

Mitte is an urban and vibrant district situated, as it names indicates, in the middle of the city comprised of of six neighbourhoods which are: Mitte, Tiergarten, Wedding, Moabit, Hansaviertel and Gesundbrunnen.

Two IB certified International schools, Berlin Cosmopolitan School and Berlin Metropolitan School have their campus in the district.

Mitte is extremely well connected to the rest of the city by public transport. U-bahn, S-Bhan, Tram and Busses stops are well spread throughout the district and Berlin’s main station Hauptbanhof is also in Mitte and is easily accessible from all neighbourhoods by bus, S-bahn and Tram. The TXL, express bus to the Tegel airport, has also several stops throughout the district.

Housing in Mitte is mostly, if not essentially, comprised of apartment buildings. They can be differentiated as old -Altbau-, modern -60/70 architecture- and new. Mitte’s attractiveness and popularity has greatly contributed to the increase of its real estate prices making it one, if not the most expensive neighbourhood in Berlin. Rental prices are very high, and vacant apartments very few. It is especially challenging for larger families to find suitable flats. In the most residential streets of Mitte you will find Altbau buildings, most of them are newly renovated, but not all of them will offers amenities such as an elevator or a parking place. Large surfaces are available but most of them have a layout that offers only one, at most two bedrooms. New real estate projects generally provide a more family friendly layout and often offer amenities such as a communal play area for young children. The modern flats, situated mostly around Alexanderplatz are the most accessible in terms of prices and the most popular with graduate students.

Mitte’s resident population is mostly comprised of urban, young to middle aged, higher than average earning, professionals, both german and foreigners
