The Au is a district located on the border of Munich’s center, right on the Isar River. Its borders are the Deutsche Museum in the North and the Wittelsbacherbrücke in the South. Since during World War II over half of the households in the Au were destroyed the buildings are mostly from the 1950 – 1960ies. Pre-dominantly because of its central location and the idyllic Isar river banks it became one of the most popular districts of Munich.
The district itself is quiet with only few shops, however, it is in walking distance to the Glockenbachviertel with its many bars and restaurants. The river banks allow for extensive walks, and in summer they are most popular to hold barbecues. The centre of the district is the Mariahilfplatz around the Mariahilf church which holds a farmer’s market twice a week.

Three times a year the Mariahilfplatz is used for the Auer Dult, a fair for dawdlers, antique traders and culinary treats. The Wirtshaus an der Au hosts the traditional rehearsal for the big Oktoberfest in July: Royal Bavarian Lederhosen Festival displaying the best of traditional attire. And each year, the famous Starkbieranstich (opening of the first barrel of stout beer) is taking place in a huge happening at the Salvator brewery at Nockerberg.
Most residents are singles or couples, schools and kindergartens are still not far because the district is rather small and the next set-ups are located closely in the neighbor districts. Two subways and several bus lines connect to the city centre and other districts.
