COLOGNE – ALTSTADT & NEUSTADT NORD

Altstadt and Neustadt are inseparable as a district. Starting right below the big cathedral it extends to the former city borders in the North. The Altstadt comprises the central shopping and business area. The Neustadt-Nord unites the Cologne life at Ebertplatz with the modernity of the Mediapark and the creative scene in the Belgian Quarter.

In short: this district is pure variety!

The Altstadt is characterized by slightly curved, irregular streets and narrow, winding streets with quaint pubs. The historical center is for one the huge cathedral, the famous landmark of Cologne, and the old wooden framed houses along the river banks. This part is regularly flooded during the rainy seasons in autumn. Strolling through the alleyways you will find numerous museums such as the "Roman-Germanic Museum", the "Wallraf-Richartz-Museum", the "Museum Ludwig" or the "Farina-Duftmuseum". Many monuments and fountains such as the figures of "Tünnes and Schäl" or the "Heinzelmännchenbrunnen" can also be explored. Shopping mall number 1 is the Schildergasse. It is not only one of the most popular shopping miles in the city, but one of the most visited shopping miles in Germany. Here you will find large department stores, but also internationally known retail chains.

Around 1880, Cologne was "expanded" in a semicircle around the old town (Altstadt) of Cologne, creating the new town (Neustadt). The northern part of the new town, Neustadt-Nord, today extends between the Cologne rings, the Inner Green Belt and the Aachener Straße.

Neustadt-Nord includes Agnesviertel - with its beautiful St. Agnes church, the Mediapark - with the multiplex cinema Cinedom, the greenbelt, the city garden district and the Belgian quarter. The latter is in great demand among the scene-goers, offers an extensive nightlife and a hip shopping scene. It owes its name to addresses such as Brussels Square, Antwerp, Maastrichter, Limburger or Brabanter Straße. Managers of large corporations, many media people, but also one or the other athletes are at home here.

Fort X is located on the outer edge of the Neustadt - it is one of the best-preserved fortifications in Cologne. The former military plant now serves as an inner-city recreational area with a rose garden.

The Neustadt-Nord adorns itself with many superlatives: In the Mediapark is the KölnTurm, with 43 floors and 148 meters height, the highest skyscraper in the city. The city's tallest building is also located in the Veedel: this is the 266-meter high television tower Colonius. The church of St. Agnes is the largest church in Cologne - after Cologne Cathedral.

The left bank Neustadt-Nord is separated in the east by the Cologne rings from the old town. The Innere Kanalstraße along the inner greenbelt separates Neustadt-Nord from the rest of Cologne. It borders Ehrenfeld, Neuehrenfeld, Nippes and Riehl in the west and northwest. Above all, well-earning singles and couples are looking for apartments here. Particularly popular is the Belgian Quarter with the contemplative Brussels Square and the Church of St. Michael in the center, which belongs to the Neustadt-Nord. It owes its name to addresses such as Brussels Square, Antwerp, Maastrichter, Limburger or Brabanter Straße. Managers of large corporations, many media people, but also one or the other athletes are at home here. Narrow streets, secluded spots, romantic fountains, small shops, cobblestones and pretty gabled houses make up the charm of the district.

The Media Park

On the site of the former freight yard Gereon, the building blocks of the MediaPark were created in the 1990s. Many media companies, broadcasters and broadcasters have set up jobs here, providing jobs for more than 2,000 people. The SK Foundation Culture with the Photographic Collection, the German Dance Archive / Dance Museum and the Akademie für Kölsch Sproch also has its headquarters here. In 1992, the Cinedom opened its doors, a major cinema with more than a dozen cinemas.

In 2013, the alpine magic winter market with alpine huts, a traditional Viennese coffeehouse, various "stands" as well as skating rinks and curling rinks were held here for the first time. It lasts until the beginning of February and gives you a winter feeling even in spring-like temperatures.

As one of the most modern media locations in Cologne, the MediaPark contrasts with the traditional streets and green spaces of the district. Here young and old meet each other and make the flair of this district.

The city garden

The oldest preserved green area in Cologne is the Stadtgarten. It was created around 1828 and changed in 1862 and 1888. The park, built in the classic landscape style, is home to numerous old solitary trees. At the Spichernstraße entrance, holidaymakers can choose reading material in the minibib, the Bücherbüdchen of the city library, and browse the countryside. And in the evening there are concerts, readings and discussion rounds at Konzerthaus Stadtgarten with the Studio 672 (live club), café and beer garden.

Interesting Buildings

In the north of the district is the ice and swimming stadium, which connects in a spectacular new building - unique in Europe - an ice and swimming pool with a circulating ice rink. In addition, the north of Neustadt is the seat of the Oberfinanzdirektion and the Higher Regional Court, which has been located on the Reichenspergerplatz in an imposing neo-Baroque Palace of Justice for more than 100 years. In the immediate vicinity is the entrance to a tubular bunker, which is almost completely preserved with original fixtures.

Other architecturally unusual buildings in the district are the churches of New-Saint Alban and Saint Gertrud. The church Sankt Agnes is after the cathedral the biggest church in Cologne. Further west is the Fort X, which is one of the best-preserved fortifications in Cologne. It is part of the former inner fastening ring and thus lies on the outer edge of the new town. Today, clubs meet in the rooms of the former military plant; On the inner wall, a rose garden, already laid out in the 1920s, pleases both eyes and nose.
