Flittard is a green enclave in the midst of big cities and industry that could still well preserve its village character. An old district on the Rhine dike and three newer parts to the east offer about 8000 citizens living and living space. And these citizens are a funny and sociable people. They have joined together in 3 parishes, 8 pubs and more than 40 clubs and groups. The village calendar is so busy that it hardly manages to survive a weekend of the year without a major event. Locals do not want to leave Flittard, guests feel right at home here.

Flittard is a suburb of Cologne on the right bank of the Rhine north of the city center. Its neighbor is Leverkusen, where the manufacture of the Bayer AG is situated. To the west, on the other side of the Rhine, is the factory of Ford located, and in the south, it borders the large premises of the sewage plants of Cologne-Stammheim. Outsiders can hardly imagine that you can live here partially idyllic. But so it is.
Originally, Flittard was once an independent peasant and fishing village, dependent on the Rhine in good and evil. The Rhine indirectly gave its name to Flittard: "Flitt-ard" developed from "floating earth". This term goes back to the frequent floods that struck the old fishing village. However, since the end of the 19th century, the annual floods are a thing of the past: a dike was built to withstand high waters of up to 10 meters.
In 1914 Flittard was incorporated into Cologne. From the Middle Ages to the 19th century, fishing and agriculture were the main economic sectors. Next to the old church tower of St. Hubertus, which dates back to the 12th century, the Bongartzhof from 1715 is one of the oldest buildings in the district. To date, Flittard has preserved its village character. In the metropolitan area of the neighboring districts and industrial sites, it looks like a green oasis. Large residential areas were built around the historic center, especially in an Eastern direction, where employees of Bayer AG, in particular, have found a home. The relatively large district is, despite the numerous industrial companies a surprisingly green district. In addition to the old center, Flittard consists of many newer residential areas with single and multi-family homes.
All amenities can be purchase locally, but bigger purchases are mostly covered in Cologne-Mülheim or the adjacent Leverkusen. There are two community elementary schools and four day care centers. There are no secondary schools here. It is connected by public transport via the S-Bahn going frequently.
