The attractiveness of Germany's fourth-largest city is ongoing. The convenient location, a crisis-proof industry mix of trade, media and automotive and the high quality of life thanks Art, Kölsch, and Carnival makes it a popular town. Rents have risen rather moderately compared to other metropolitan areas, but the trend is straight up. Furnished apartments might still be somewhat cheaper than in Munich or Berlin, but then, 950 EUR for a furnished 1-bedroom apartment is still a solid price to pay. The average going rate for unfurnished apartments in the popular neighborhoods is above 16,50 EUR per m². The Western districts located west of the Rhein, so-called "linksrheinisch" districts are considerably more expensive than those on the right hand side. The western South is also very popular and that shows in the prices.
