These districts are a mixture between exclusive residential area and in-crowd quarterwith representative town houses. Both districts belong to the top addresses in Hamburg and people living here are much wealthier than in other districts, in Harvestehude even more (74.000 EUR average income of a taxpayer) than in Rotherbaum (51.000 EUR) which is caused by a lot of students living here.
Big parts of the Hamburg University are located in Rotherbaum, and thus next to big luxury villas there are student hostels. And a lot of "Art Nouveau" style buildings comprise small apartments or shared apartments rented to students. The architecture is a beautiful mixture between red clinker brick and white villas from the 18th century.
Houses are very rare, most of the residents live in apartments. There are a bit more burglaries in Rotherbaum (14% of all residents have suffered from theft - slightly above Hamburg average of 13%) than in Harvestehude (8%). People in Rotherbaum come from everywhere in the world and some 28% have a migration background; hence the quarter is rich of culture. Harvestehude is a little less international.
Along the streets Mittelweg and Grindelberg there are lots of cafes and restaurants. They are also the key links to the outer suburbs and thus traffic is thick. Still, their atmosphere is not too negatively impacted and these two streets are as pricy as the rest of the quarter. Pöseldorf with its little boutiques and the absence of the big shopping chains gives it an individual, upmarket but cozy, flavor. Both districts have direct access to the huge park "Alsterwiesen", which is a green belt alongside the Aussenalster which is heavily used by runners, bikers and sunbathers. White wooden chairs are speckled on the grass and invite for a short brake, with a book or an iPhone. Rotherbaum is also famous for the yearly tennis championship.
The percentage of families living in these two districts is slightly smaller than average. 34 kindergartens, 3 primary schools and 5 secondary schools take care of the children in these quarters.
